Cape Disappointment State Park to Manzanita, Oregon: 56 miles
Cold morning but feel relatively good. Jordan and I skipped breakfast and met Soo and Martin in Astoria for a big breakfast at a diner. Crossing the Astoria Bridge was interesting. The shoulder was about 2 feet wide with trucks and cars whizzing by. Fortunately, there was very little wind to deal with. The bridge is 4.7 miles across with a 1.4 mile climb which seemed like a 15% slope. We biked through two tunnels today. Even a small car approaching sounds like a 747.
Martin joined the bike ride after breakfast. We rode about 7 miles to Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark set up winter quarters. Martin stayed with Soo to check out the fort while Jordan and I pressed on. After leaving the fort, I took a right when I should have taken a left (sounds familiar doesn't it?). What's an extra 2 miles? For my legs, a lot! Jordan just shrugged it off. In fact, he was taunting me all day by riding without his hands on the handle bars. He has no butt pain either. He makes me sick.
Prior to reaching Seaside, we danced with some more logging trucks. Oregon seems to be the king of clear-cuts. We had lunch with Martin and Soo in Cannon Beach.
Some pretty big hills awaited us after lunch. My left knee, right hamstring and butt are not feeling much love. I remember during my college days that after a couple of days of riding the butt pain would go away. Just a memory I guess. So far I'm living up to the blog name. The climb was worth it because at the top of the climb there was a lookout spot of Manzanita Beach that was incredible.
